Two different works that are variations on "Ich schell mein Horn" by Richard Burdick & Paul Hindemith, and music of Paul's student Bernhard Heiden. The variations by Burdick for seven horns is an amazing work & it sound more traditional than Hindemith.

About the Music:
This CD opens with the Morgenmusik that is the first part of four from Hindemith’s "Plöner Musiktag" which sets a whole day to music. Hindemith wrote the work for students during his four-day stay in a boarding school in Plön, Schleswig-Holstein in June 1932. I didn’t arrange the work for four horns, I just read the parts as Hindemith published them.

Bernhard Heiden, who was born in Frankfurt in 1910, fled Germany in 1935 and taught at Indiana University from 1946 to 1981 died in Bloomington in 2000. He wrote his Five Canons for two horns in 1971 and his horn quartet for Michael Höltzel in 1981.

Paul Hindemith wrote his horn quartet in 1951-2 after being inspired by a  Salzburg horn group playing Germanic folk songs. Paul used the tune “Ich schell mein Horn” from the first songbook of Arnt von Aich (1519) for the theme and variations of the fourth movement.

I had wanted to write a work for large horn ensemble, so I chose seven horns for the work. I used the Ludwig Senfl (1486-1543) version of “Ich schell mein Horn” for the basis of my work to help tie the CD into a unified whole. Recording a 21-minute long work for 7 horns means I recorded 2 hours and 27 minutes of “product” just for this premiere.

About the CD:
Ich Schell mein Horn, can be translated as “I sound” or “I ring” my horn. I have found three historic versions of this tune:

1) The Ludwig Senfl (1486-1543) version that I used as the basis for my variations. (track 20)

2) Anonymous: “Ich schell mein Horn” from the first songbook of Arnt von Aich (1519) which Hindemith used. (track 22)

3) The Johannes Brahms version “Ich schell mein Horn ins Jammertal” Op. 43 No. 3 (track 21)

This CD took quite a while to complete. I spent all summer of 2017 finalizing my own work. I also recorded a number of the works a few time. I first recorded the Heiden duos in 2013, so really this CD spanned five years in its creation.

I began with the idea of “H” composers: Heiden and Hindemith. I would have rather put out American Horn music volume three, but I really wanted to work on the Hindemith, and he doesn’t quite fit in America or the American category despite his travels there. Heiden was a student of Hindemith, so there is a good connection.

As I recorded and listened to the works, I was quite surprized that my work is less experimental or free than the Hindemith quartet written in 1952.
