Program Notes:

Tracks 1:
Composer Max Brauer (1855-1918) wrote this Rondino for 4 horns. He lived in Mannheim Germany

Tracks 2-8: Josef Ebner (1880- ?) is now completely unknown today.

Track 9-11: Constantin Homolius - Quartett in B-dur für Waldhörner in F, Op. 38

Track 12-13: This came from a collection of horn music belonging to the horn player Louis Michiels, who had already written a Horn Quartet in 1896. It is highly speculative but he could possibly be the composer.
Horn player, composer and music publisher Louis Michiels studied music in the Royal Conservatory of Liège, Belgium. Before 1914 he immigrated to Montreal, where he became quite actively involved in that city’s musical life. Not long thereafter he began to publish a number of incidental pieces for piano in a local newspaper. Around 1925 he co founded the Belgian-Canadian Musical Institute which was modeled after European instructional methods. That year he also founded Edition Belgo-Canadienne, which published works by Canadian composers as well as a number of treatises by Belgian musicians. Although the firm was sold around 1929, it appears that most of the company’s inventory was destroyed by fire some six years later. In 1927 he helped to found the Society of Musician Artists. However, in 1930 it was reported that he and thirty other members had been forced to resign due to “ulterior motives.”
Track 14: František Picka (1873-1918) Prague was Czech organist, conductor, choirmaster and composer.

Track 15-17: Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) wrote: two duets and Notturno for Four Horns. He was a Russian composer and a member of the group of composers known as The Five.

Tracks 18-22: Gioachino Antonio Rossini ( 1792 – 1868) Wrote the Notturno for Four Horn. He was an Italian composer who gained fame for his 39 operas, although he also wrote many songs, some chamber music and piano pieces, and some sacred music. He set new standards for both comic and serious opera before retiring from large-scale composition while still in his thirties, at the height of his popularity.

Track 23: Franz Strauss was the father of Richard Strauss

Franz Joseph Strauss (1822 – 1905) was a German musician. He was a composer, virtuoso horn player and accomplished performer on the guitar, clarinet and viola. He was principal horn player of the Bavarian Court Opera for more than 40 years, a teacher at the Royal School of Music, Munich, and a conductor.

Strauss is perhaps best known as the father of the composer Richard Strauss, on whose early musical development he was a great influence, steering his son to the classical and away from modern styles. As a composer, Strauss senior is remembered for his works for the horn. They include two concertos and numerous smaller works.
